Imaging Performance of FIGARO-IV, A Large Area γ-Ray Telescope Above 100 MeV.

1995

We are developing a new telescope, named FIGARO-IV, for γ-ray astronomy above 100 MeV, in which the electron-positron pairs, produced by photons in lead converters, are tracked in several independent planes of Limited Streamer Tubes (LST). Because of its large sensitive area and good angular resolution, this telescope is well suitable, and competitive with respect to satellite-based detectors as EGRET, to localise discrete γ-ray sources in a relatively short observation time, to detect high-energy γ-ray bursts and to investigate both periodic and random time variability on -ray sources.

Counting IndividualCa41Atoms with a Magneto-Optical Trap

2004

Atom trap trace analysis, a novel method based upon laser trapping and cooling, is used to count individual atoms of $^{41}\mathrm{Ca}$ present in biomedical samples with isotopic abundance levels between ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}8}$ and ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}10}$. The method is calibrated against resonance ionization mass spectrometry, demonstrating good agreement between the two methods. The present system has a counting efficiency of $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}7}$. Within 1 h of observation time, its $3\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}\ensuremath{\sigma}$ detection limit on the isotopic abundance of $^{41}\mathrm{Ca}$ reaches $4.5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10…

Empirical study of extreme rainfall intensity in a semi-arid environment at different time scales

2014

Abstract Mediterranean environments are typical of semi-arid regions, dominated by episodes of torrential rain in which the critical variable is not the total rainfall, but the intensity. This paper studies the maximum rainfall intensities at different observation time scales, from 5 min to 24 h, over eastern Spain from 1994 to 2007. The statistical rainfall characteristics for each time scale are analysed and the effects of specific geographical factors – altitude, aspect and distance to the sea – for each observation interval are tested. The results show that extreme intensities are heavily dependent on the time scale. There are two important turning points in this trend, at 1 h and 6 h. …

The Randomized Shortened Dental Arch Study

2012

The scientific evidence concerning prosthodontic care for the shortened dental arch (SDA) is sparse. This randomized multicenter study aimed to compare two common treatment options: removable partial dental prostheses (RPDPs) for molar replacement vs. no replacement (SDA). One of the hypotheses was that the follow-up treatment differs between patients with RPDPs and patients with SDAs during the 5-year follow-up period. Two hundred and fifteen patients with complete molar loss in one jaw were included in the study. Molars were either replaced by RPDPs or not replaced according to the SDA concept. A mean number of 4.2 (RPDP) and 2.8 (SDA) treatments for biological or technical reasons occur…

Doubling Recruitment of Pediatric Low-grade Glioma within Two Decades does not change Outcome – Report from the German LGG Studies

2021

Successive multicenter studies for pediatric low-grade glioma (LGG) in Germany were accompanied by a doubling of annual recruitment over 2 decades. We investigated whether this increase conveyed a change of epidemiologic characteristics or survival.Participating centers reported 4634 patients with the radiologic/histologic diagnosis of LGG (1996-2018), rising from 109 to 278/year. Relating these numbers to all pediatric CNS tumors registered at the German Childhood Cancer Registry, the LGG fraction and annual crude incidence rates increased (32% to 51%; 0.94 to 2.12/100,000 children/adolescents15 years). The consecutive LGG studies recruited 899 (HIT-LGG 1996), 1592 (SIOP-LGG 2004), and 183…
